 Custom Computer Design

Your custom computer is specifically designed to your specific needs unlike the one size fits all Superstore models. By this we (You the Client and I) discuss everything you expect your computer to accomplish. Partnering up and designing your custom built computer gives you the client the freedom of choice in what goes into your system, the knowledge that your computer will stand up to your specific needs and the peace of mind that you had a part and say in how it will be built.

When we design your computer system you will not get all the unused unwanted shareware and time limited software. You can expect quality workmanship as well as quality non-generic components in each system we build. What does this mean to you as the consumer? This guarantees you the best quality computer with the best possible warranty.

I once talked with a skeptical person who told me that all computers are the same no matter who builds them or how they are built. I came up with a pretty good story for him and I would like to share it with you.

Billy Bob Thorton is a gamer who likes his Monster Truck Madness. He has his Recliner wired with a vibrator for the effects, a small refrigerator next to his chair for his beer and a sound system that drives the neighbors up the wall but he loves that Monster Truck Madness.

Down the street Debbie DuPree owns a dress shop. She uses her computer for making her patterns, bookkeeping, customer information and invoicing. She is a busy bee that Debbie DuPree.

Up the street is Cid’s Recording Studio with the latest sounds out to date producing the best quality CD’s to date. I hear Cid wants to expand in video too.

Now a block over is the Law Office’s of Legal Eagle and Eagle Eye. They don’t care at all about Billy Bob’s Monster Truck Madness game, they don’t care about Debbie’s dress patterns either, heck they aren’t even bothered by Cid’s CD’s. The only thing that concerns them is that all documents they take into court have all the I’s dotted and all the T’s crossed.

So as you see not all computers are the same. Just like there are a large variety of people from all walks of life there are just as many different needs in computer systems.

There is a moral to this story… The skeptical person I was telling you about; Well he is one of my closest friends since childhood and he has designed three computers with us.

 Name Brand Vs. Generic

When most people think about the term “Name Brand” they usually think clothes, shoes, jewellery and other accessories. When we think of “Name Brand” the terms quality, compatibility, longevity, and “Here Today and Still Here Tomorrow” come to mind.
In every computer we build we only use name brand internal components like Asus, Intel, AMD, Western Digital, Seagate, Kingston, Corsair, Crucial, EVGA, ATI, Antec, Rosewill, SIIG, HT|Omega, Cool Master, ZEROtherm, Sony, LG, and the list of reputable component manufactures goes on. These companies have been here since the days of the x386 systems to present day. This is why their components are components of choice with Gilbertson Enterprises. We will never, ever use “Here Today Gone Tomorrow” Generic components. Then there are the external component manufacturers that we use like Cisco, Logitech, Creative, Microsoft, Kensington, Belkin, Samsung, HP, and Liteon, Linksys and again the long list of manufacturers keep on coming to mind. The sad part about writing this page is that every time I sit back or take a drink of my coffee more names pop in my head that I add because of there equal strengths and value.
Gilbertson Enterprises is a small company with over 30 years of custom building computers. We don’t have a large warehouse stocked with components we order our components through our vendors at the time we are ready to build. We do this for various reasons, (1) Keeps our overhead down so we can pass on the saving to our customers. (2) Less chance of defective components out of the box. (3) Knowing we are getting the most up to date firmware with each product.
So what can you expect from your computer built by Gilbertson Enterprises?
     • Affordability.
     • Built to your requirements.
     • Your Computer Needs and specifications will be met.
     • Name brand Quality components.
     • No Generic “Here Today Gone Tomorrow” Components.
     • A company that stands behind you and the product.

Custom Built Computers Vs. Mass Produced Computers

I am a computer consultant, manufacturer of custom computers, educator of the value of a custom built computer over the readymade computer systems you may purchase at your local super stores. The computer you may purchase today is preceded by numerous sales to people just like you getting the same exact system you are seeking. This statement also holds true for those who purchase after you.

     * A custom computer is a computer built to your specific needs where as the super store computer is mass produced.

   * A custom computer is built with your specific needs in mind, where the mass produced super store computers are a one size fits all variety.

    * The builder of custom computers have a sense of pride with quality in mind using quality components giving the client more bang for their buck, where the manufactures of mass produced computers will use generic components and components of a lesser quality to keep their costs down.

     * The builder of custom computers will give a better guaranty and warranty on their systems because of the dedication and research that they put into the components and their manufacturers to insure you get the best quality in your computer system, most warranties will be 3 years or more. The manufacturers of mass produced computers will only give a 1 year warranty and extend it one more year if you purchase the extended warranty agreement.

    * The builder of custom computers will include all software with their systems which includes the operating system. The manufacturers of mass produced computers will create a hidden partition on the hard drive and install the software and operating system and you need to purchase the optional recovery discs.

    * The builder of custom computers do not include hidden partitions incase of hard drive failure, for this is the reason for the included software and operating system. The manufacturers of mass produced computers will sell you a new hard drive after failure minus any operating system leaving you to purchase a new licensed copy of the operating system and software you supposedly already own.

   * The builder of custom computers can be contacted during regular business hours unless otherwise specified for support. Whereas the majority of the manufacturers of mass produced computers are hard to get support or take too much of your precious time waiting for answers.

The old story goes like this "You Get What You Pay For" but in the life expectancy of the mass produced computer it is more like "Why Pay the Cadillac Price For a Pinto?" Get the Cadillac get what you paid for.

Preventive Maintenance

  Preventive Maintenance
We at Gilbertson Enterprises offer an Extended Warranty Program on all our New Computers and in some cases may include Upgrades and Repairs for a small fee. But as they say it comes with a small “Catch”. The Catch is this “Preventative Maintenance”. This is a service which can be provided by us or another reputable computer shop local to you. Just have your local service center send us a business letter head and description of qualifications. We will verify their information and add them to our Data base.

  Preventive Maintenance Schedule
Preventive maintenance is a schedule of planned maintenance actions aimed at the prevention of breakdowns and failures. The primary goal of preventive maintenance is to prevent the failure of equipment components before it actually occurs. It is designed to preserve and enhance equipment reliability by replacing worn components before they actually fail. Preventive maintenance activities include equipment checks, partial or complete diagnostics at specified periods and system cleaning. Dust and Debris will shorten the life expectancy of any electronic component through the heat it will create due to lack of ventilation.

  Why a Preventive Maintenance Schedule?
Electronic components are a magnet to dust, moisture, and little spider critters, so keeping your system clean of all debris is very important to keeping your system operating at peak performance. The Components most under attack in all cases are the Power Supply, Processor, Memory, Hard Drives, Video and Sound cards not to mention any other plug in components in your system. Other areas that seem to be overlooked are the CD and DVD drives along with any other external port connections. So you can see why your system should have a regular PM check up schedule.
In addition, technicians can record equipment deterioration so they know to replace or repair worn defective components before they cause system failure. Recent technological advances in tools for inspection and diagnosis have enabled even more accurate and effective equipment maintenance. The ideal preventive maintenance program would prevent all equipment failure before it occurs.

  Value of Preventive Maintenance
There are multiple misconceptions about preventive maintenance. One such misconception is that PM is unduly costly. This logic dictates that it would cost more for regularly scheduled downtime and maintenance than it would normally cost to operate equipment until repair is absolutely necessary. This may be true for some components; however, one should compare not only the costs but the long-term benefits and savings associated with preventive maintenance. Without preventive maintenance, for example, costs for lost production time from unscheduled equipment breakdown will be incurred. Also, preventive maintenance will result in savings due to an increase of effective system service life.
Long-term benefits of preventive maintenance include:
    • Improved system reliability.
    • Decreased cost of replacement.
    • Decreased system downtime.
    • Better spares inventory management.
Long-term effects and cost comparisons usually favor preventive maintenance over performing maintenance actions only when the system fails.

When Does Preventive Maintenance Make Sense?
Preventive maintenance is a logical choice if, and only if, the following two conditions are met:
#1: The component in question has an increasing failure rate. In other words, the failure rate of the component increases with time, thus implying wear-out. Preventive maintenance of a component that is assumed to have an exponential distribution (which implies a constant failure rate) does not make sense!
#2: The overall cost of the preventive maintenance action must be less than the overall cost of a corrective action. (Note: In the overall cost for a corrective action, one should include ancillary tangible and/or intangible costs, such as downtime costs, loss of production costs, lawsuits over the failure of a safety-critical item, loss of goodwill, etc.)
If both of these conditions are met, then preventive maintenance makes sense. Additionally, based on the costs ratios, an optimum time for such action can be easily computed for a single component.

  The Bottom Line
The bottom line to this topic is simple. No matter if your computer system is brand new with an extended warranty or an old 386x model computer from the 80’s, a PM check or schedule is important to keep things operating at the utmost proficiency.

All Software included

  All Licensed Software is Included
Unlike other builders we do not supply you inferior backup discs or create a hidden backup partition on your new PC. Instead we supply you with all the licensed software you purchased. If for any reason you need to reinstall your operating system or purchased software it’s there in hand.

There are few reasons we at Gilbertson Enterprises chose to do this right from the very beginning.

In 1986 when Gilbertson Enterprises first came to life we chose not to get involved with the backup Floppy Discs or Partitioned hard drive because:
Back in 1986 the popular software installation drives (Drive A and Drive B) were commonly used Floppy drives consisting of a 3.5 inch hard shelled Floppy disc holding up to 1.44 meg of data and a less commonly used 5.25 inch soft floppy holding up to 1.2 meg of data. Seeing that the smaller 3.5 floppy was more reliable and held more data the 5.25 soon became phased out.

  Five Reasons
The reasons we chose not to get involved with Data Recovery Discs were there inconsistency as a form of safe storage. They were primarily a thin plastic disc impregnated with a metal oxide like our cassettes of the day and if improperly handled or stored were susceptible to oxidation that rendered them unreadable.

The second reason we chose not to get involved with Data Recovery Partitions were the backup files took up to much space on the hard drives of the day. The 100 meg hard drives were still in development and a 2 Terabyte hard drive was unheard of.

The third reason was licensing issues. As the computer software business expanded so did software piracy. As this was becoming a dilemma for the software manufacturers they started encoding their licensed software which in my opinion was fine but at the same time made it harder for legitimate businesses to acquire reseller status licensing.

The forth reason is security and identification of your computer system.   When your licensed software is installed it is registered as you the customer “John Q Public” and not a generic name like “Favored Customer of Gilbertson Enterprises” or “Favored Customer of Midnight Computer Sales”. This will also register you the customer as the legal licensed owner throughout the computer system starting with the Computers Property page as with all the about drop downs under the software help menus. This is your proof of ownership when in need of technical support and also in case of it being lost or stolen.

The fifth and final reason is in the event that your hard drive needs to be reformatted and a fresh install of your licensed software, or hard drive failure where the hard drive needs replacement.

Full Limited 3 Year Warranty

In the earlier years of Personal Computers most builders had a 6 Month or a 1 Year warranty on all components and labor. We chose to research those manufactures that had the best Quality Control and Warranty on their products.

This is the reason why we at Gilbertson Enterprises will not use the commonly used Generic Components. By installing the best quality components from manufactures that have been here since the beginning of the computer age We know a few things.

  (1) These Manufactures have been here this long; there is no reason to believe they will be gone tomorrow.
  (2) These Manufacturers like Gilbertson Enterprises strive on perfection and customer satisfaction making the best quality components technology will allow.
  (3) Consistently pushing the technology envelope.
So it is in our belief that with the components that we use in a computer system, we know we are giving you the best technology has to offer feeling confident that our warranty will meet and exceed the life of our 3 year warranty on all parts and labor of a new custom built computer systems.

Unfortunately just like anything else there is a down side to our warranty.

  What is not covered?
    • Nothing is covered if the customer is delinquent in any way with their payments.
    • Components that were installed by the customer or given to us by the customer to install.
    • Software issues; including but not limited to; operating system errors or failures, viruses, spyware, etc.
    • All external peripherals such as; but not limited to; mice, keyboards, monitors, printers, scanners, web cams, microphones, etc. These are warranted by their respective manufacturers.
    • Damage due to intentional misuse or neglect.
    • Acts of God such as; but not limited to; floods, electrical damage, fire, wind damage, etc.
    • Damage to the tower that occurs during transportation. A car accident is an example.
    • Damage or confiscation that occurs due to a criminal act or investigation.
    • Batteries or other perishable power sources.
    • Any data or other important information that might be lost due to hardware failure.
    • Deliberate misuse or vandalism.
    • Acts of Terrorism, War or criminal activities.

Domain & Hosting Consultant

  The Simple Rules
Before you can take part on the World Wide Web with your own web presents you will need three things to start. You will need a Domain name, a place to host, and your new web site.

  Choosing A Domain Name
Choosing a domain name is an extremely important part of designing your website, as that becomes the name of your website. Your domain name is the first part of the Uniform Resource Locator, or "URL." There are many things to keep in mind while choosing a suitable domain name.

If you haven't already chosen a domain name, give some serious thought as to what it is going to be. For those who are new to the internet, the domain name, also known as a website address, is a word or phrase that a website visitor has to type in to visit your site. It's preceded by http://www, although for modern-day browsers typing this portion in is optional. It ends with .com, .net, .org, .biz, or a host of other extensions that you'll be exposed to when you're ready to sign up for your domain name.

Stuffing your domain name with keywords won’t help much, if at all, unless those keywords naturally make sense. For example, don't pick "wormsandabucket.com" if you're planning to launch a site for Auto Parts and Service, this may be a good choice for a fishing charter business or fisherman supply.

Also, avoid abbreviations. Using your whole site name will make your domain name easier to remember. Try to get a ".com" name, as these are the most popular and easiest for most users to remember. However, if this is impossible, don't use .com anywhere in the name if your site is under ".net". Doing so is tacky, and will only cause confusion to potential visitors. Remember to display your site name--prominently. Multiple domains can be a good idea but only when built as a complete strategy. Each domain also requires different content to avoid being penalized by search engines for duplicate content.

  Buying a Domain Name
To buy a domain name, you can do so directly from your web hosting provider, or through a separate domain name service. If you're using a separate domain name service for your domain, make sure you save all the information provided to you from the Registrar. You will need all this information when you find your hosting provider, and in some cases changing your hosting provider.
The registrar will provide you with:
    • Your Domain Name
    • Login Name to your registered account
    • Password to your registered account
It would be a good thing to keep this information in a safe place and DO NOT give your login name or password to anyone.

I personally use godaddy.com but there are many trusted alternatives out there as register.com and networksolutions.com as well. Another good strategy is to choose and register your domain in advance of building your site. You then have the comfort of knowing that the name belongs to you. When you register a domain without having a site, typing the name into the browser will bring up a page indicating that it's parked. This means the name is owned by someone but a website has not yet been launched.

The process for signing up for a domain name works the same way whether it's through a hosting provider or through a separate domain name service. You'll be asked to enter into a text box the domain name you want to register. The service shows you the extensions you can choose. Generally, you always want to go with .com, since this is the most popular domain name extension. In terms of what domain name to use, this is where keyword optimization comes into play. That's right--even your domain name should be keyword optimized. Don't fall into the temptation that many webmasters do and use something catchy and creative for your website. It might be more memorable to potential visitors, especially if you use a lot of offline marketing, but it won't get your site ranked high in search engines. Ultimately, you will want to use keywords to create a domain name that is both memorable and likely to be ranked in the first 10 listings of search engine results.

However, keywords in the domain are useful for reasons outside of just ranking by its words. How people link to you and what the description reads in the incoming "backlink," or anchor text, plays a key role. So if you have realestate-mortgage-loans.com it's better than simply remloans.com. The latter is shorter, but the former yields a better link popularity strategy.

If your desired domain name is taken, the domain name service recommends other selections you could use. This can be helpful, since sometimes they can come up with suggestions that might rank better than your original choice. Or, they could be terrible, especially in terms of their length. Generally, the best domain names are short, contain no hyphens, and offer an excellent one-, two-, or three-word summary of what the site is about. An example of an excellent domain name could be cheapknives.com. It's short, contains no hyphens, and, if it's pointing to a website selling affordable knives, perfectly summarizes the main point of the site.

  Get Registered
Once you've decided on your domain name, you need to register it. Be extremely careful of who you select to manage your domain registrations, losing your domain name could put you out of business not to mention the payment you made to the registrar is non-refundable. So if and when all possible take charge of your Domain manage it yourself, there are plenty of trusting people that will help guide you without the need of accessing your account. You may want to choose a hosting company before registering your domain name. Many hosting companies will register the name for you when you set up your hosting account. But beware of those who do not provide you with all your needed information.

A little over a decade ago, Network Solutions dominated the domain registration field, charging $100 annually for service. Today, hundreds of registrars exist, which can cause difficulty in choosing one. One choice for Accredited Registrars is go directly to the ICANN Site of Accredited Registrars. Here you will find an extensive list of Accredited Registrars by Country. Another method is to use a tool such as RegSelect, which can help you compare prices and options of domain registration companies.

All registrars require the name of the company or individual who owns the domain (the registrant), the individual authorized to handle daily matters (the administrative contact), and the person who handles all things technical (the technical contact).

Most registrars have rules against using false names, and you'll run the risk of not receiving important notices if you do so. Whoever possesses the registrar username and password is essentially in control of the domain, despite the fact that the legal owner is the registrant, so be careful. Choose a complex password, as this could protect you from being hacked. Hackers could have the opportunity to change ownership or servers associated with your account. Try to find a registrar that allows you to "lock" your accounts. Finally, avoid registering your domain name with your web hosting service. This could complicate a domain transfer, should you decide to change hosting companies later.

Web Hosting

  Gilbertson Enterprises Reliable Web Hosting
Do you need a Domain and Hosting?
We can help you in getting setup with your Domain name and hosting.

How to choose a web hosting company.
When choosing a web hosting company, you need to first find what style website it is that you plan to host: This very fact will directly affect how you go about choosing a web hosting provider. For example, do you plan to make a small, personal website that consists of only a few web pages about yourself or just an intro of your company, or do you need a larger site with a lot of pages with every of your business? The size of the website you plan to design will have a direct effect on the web hosting provider that you chose because you will need to choose a web hosting provider that can provide you with the amount of storage space, bandwidth, and additional features that you may require to develop your site.

Another, when choosing a web hosting company, you should take a look at the various packages that are offered by web hosting providers in your reach. It is wise to take your time and research a number of different web hosting providers: compare packages and prices when you research web hosting providers.

Alternatively, for the same reason that you should not choose the first web hosting provider you find, you should not necessarily choose a web hosting provider simply because they provide free services. Frequently, the free web hosting services offered by a web hosting provider comes with strings attached; in other words, you will find that the number of pages you are able to design is extremely limited, that you are limited in the file size and type you can upload, or that you are required to display advertisements on the site hosted by the web hosting provider.

Finally, when looking for choosing a web hosting provider make absolutely sure that you read the terms and conditions provided by the web hosting provider. Rules and regulations will vary from one web hosting provider to another and you wouldn’t want to encounter unexpected hassles down the road because you did not carefully review the terms offered by the web hosting provider before you signed up for hosting. In the end, with careful comparative shopping and a firm knowledge about what it is you plan to design, you will have no difficulty successfully choosing a web hosting provider.

Reciprocal Linking

Some say reciprocal linking is dead. Sites like Google will not rank you without a high Page Rank. I am one of those that believe anything can be turned around if people like us take back the Power of the Web from the Spammers and Crammers. Page Ranking or not reciprocal linking is still by far one the best forms of free word of mouth (You might say) advertising, as long as it is used correctly. So at this point we are going to see about creating a comeback to the reciprocal linking system.

We have in the past shared links with some just to find out that our links were not visible, removed, never added or deliberately modified rendering the link useless. So we have come up with a few guidelines which we will discuss shortly. But I am a believer there is still Good in the world and on the Web.

We are implementing a reciprocal linking exchange system to our websites and here’s a little insight to how it works.
(Reciprocal links are arranged when two or more web sites agree to link to each other.)
Reciprocal links can still help you in two ways:
   1. They increase your web site traffic, from people who click on the links regardless of Page Ranking.
   2. Reciprocal links also still play a major role in boosting your rankings in search engines providing they are used correctly and not abused.
This should be simple enough as long as there is the common trust that each website is playing fair by supporting an open links page that visitors and the search bots can access.

As I stated earlier, we have setup a few Guidelines for our reciprocal linking system.
   1. We will add any relevant text or banner link as long as there is a same link pointing back to our site.
   2. We reserve the right to review a website before (a) adding a website to our links pages and (b) allowing our text link or banner to be added to a website.
   3. We reserve the right to refuse links that are distasteful, demeaning, prejudicial, or illegal.
   4. We reserve the right to remove a link that (a) has no reciprocating link, or (b) one that is buried so far that it can’t be easily found.
   5. We will only share links of relevance; after all it hardly makes sense to exchange links that won’t compliment each other.
As we all know a reciprocal link is a commitment. The link basically says "The site owner at the other end of this link feels that my site is important enough to link to, and I feel that their site is important enough that I am willing to let visitors leave my site via this link."

A Great Link Exchange is only as good as the of relevance of the reciprocal linking being exchanged.
